A drafting chair is a cross between a tall bar stool and an secretary’s office chair. It has the half back of the secretary’s office chair instead of the heavy full back of the executive office chair, although there is some variation in the size of the back. A drafting chair also has the smaller seat of a secretary’s office chair and not the large seat of an executive office chair. The height of the back and the depth of the seat are adjustable on some drafting chairs. The chair usually has slender arms with a little padding, although there are armless versions. The chair pivots on the central column of the base, and has casters on a five-legged stand. Five legs prevents the chair from tipping over too easily.

The height of a drafting chair is similar to a tall bar stool, and is needed because a drafting table is large, and when tilted, comes up to nearly six feet off the floor. The taller chair allows the user to stay seated for more of the time, so the user only has to stand to work at the very top of the drafting table. The other bar stool feature the drafting chair has is the foot rest. The foot rest is necessary because sitting on a high chair without something to brace your feet on is very tiring.

Most drafting chairs are chrome with black leather or vinyl upholstery, although sometimes the back is metal mesh to allow the user’s back to breathe while working. They have adjustable settings for height, which allows you to use these chairs for home bars. They are made of sturdy material and may last longer than the usually home bar stools and chairs. Of course, they will cost more, but if you plan on using these chairs on a daily basis and for a long time, the extra cost will be worthwhile to prevent early replacement of the chairs.

If you are setting up a home theater and do not want to go with the usual theater seats, you can achieve the tiered effect by using ergonomic drafting chairs as the back row. Drafting chairs are a good choice because they are usually sturdy and easily cleaned if there are food and drink mishaps. With the pivot feature, people waiting for the show to begin can turn to face each other to talk. The shorter back means that only the very tired will fall asleep during the movie, and they should be somewhere else taking a nap if they are that tired. You can then use regular chairs for the middle row, and keep folding beach chairs for the youngsters to recline in the front row. You home theater seating is complete.

Combine a bar with these chairs and a home theater projection system to provide a complete entertainment room. Add a game table or two and some chairs for them and you will have everything you need for your game room but the games and the movies.
