A place to sit is as much a necessity outside as it is inside. Therefore, chairs, stools and couches are needed, but these are also exposed to the weather. No upholstery, then. Even if the furniture is covered completely when not in use, weather involves humidity and large temperature variations, which are death to cloth and stuffing materials. So, what is the best seating for outdoors?
Well, for ease of storage and versatility, folding outdoor chairs. These come in several forms and can be used near their storage or moved to where needed. If stored in a garden shed, they will last much longer, and are light enough to be carried to the back or front yard, on camping trips and to the local pool or Little League ball field.
Folding outdoor chairs usually have a metal frame, although director chairs are usually made from wood. The material added to the frame may be plastic or fabric. One form of folding outdoor chair is the lawn chair. Plastic webbed bands about two inches wide are interwoven from side to side and front to back, providing a strong seat and back rest that also breathes. Loungers are also made in this fashion. The second plastic on metal form is chairs with solid plastic bands about an inch wide that run from side to side on both the chair seat and the chair back. Lounges are also available in this form of folding outdoor chairs, as is an occasional rocking chair.
The fabric on metal frame folding outdoor chair also comes in several forms. As mentioned before, the directors chair, as seen on movie and TV sets, we are told, uses a fabric sling from side to side on the chair seat and back. It is possible that these chairs with plastic fabric instead of canvas are available. Another fabric and metal frame chair is the chair in a bag. These are usually folding chair forms more reminiscent of the butterfly chair of the 1960′s, and the fabric, usually heavy rip-stop nylon, is permanently attached to the frame so opening the chair is only one operation instead fitting the material to the frame and then opening it. These chairs can be fairly simple, or include arms and even cup holders. The whole thing folds into a nylon bag with a shoulder strap so the chair can be easily carried to outdoor events or the camp or beach. And, especially for the beach, are folding chairs that sit very low to the ground in order to allow the user to stretch their legs out for tanning. The seat and back are usually fabric to allow them to breathe and are permanently attached to the metal frame.
Finally, there are folding stools for outdoor seating. These are usually lighter and easier to maneuver, and are thus preferred by anyone who is going to have to carry them a long way from the car or truck. Hunters and backpackers may prefer this form of outdoor folding chair for this reason.
There are many forms of outdoor folding chairs, with both metal or wood frames, and plastic or fabric seats and backs. The ones you need are determined by the users ability to carry the chairs to the place needed or to get someone else to carry them. They can be as simple as a stool or as complicated as a butterfly chair with arms and cur holders.
