Remember the advent of plastic stacking chairs? For the first time a comfortable bucket was available for temporary or institutional seating, and the chairs could be stacked out of the way for cleaning or when not needed.
Plastic stacking chairs are generally a molded form that encompasses the seat and back in a single piece, to which two metal pieces are added, each consisting of two legs and a cross piece that helps strengthen the chair. From these three pieces, comfortable and inexpensive seating for crowds of people can be provided. The chairs are easy to clean, if necessary, and provide hours of entertainment to youngsters. On a tile floor, they can be pushed around, and the shape and smoothness just seem to call to the young. And there is not hinge to pinch little fingers.
The cost of these chairs is low, another reason that they proved to be so popular. Compared to the initial cost and maintenance of upholstered chairs, the plastic chairs are far more economical. Compared to the folding steel chair, which may be in a similar price range, the plastic chairs are more comfortable if the occupant has to sit for long. The disadvantage of a single plastic stackable chair versus a single folding metal chair is the storage space. But once you begin stacking the plastic chairs, it soon becomes obvious that the floor space needed for an equivalent number of chairs is smaller for the stacking chairs than the folding chairs. The space required for the stacking plastic chairs is basically the size defined by the four feet of the chair. On that footprint can be stacked twelve to fifteen chairs, while the folding chairs add a couple of inches to the floor space required with the addition of each chair.
In both cases metal carts are available to hold and transport the chairs in multiples. This is essentially for commercial spaces, as the use of the rooms will change and the number of chairs needed change from day to day.
One disadvantage to the plastic stacking chair is that the plastic will lose strength and color over time. Exposure to light and the daily wear and tear will eventually make the chair weak enough that it needs to be removed from use. The folding metal chair, if poorly or lightly made, will also have this problem, but it is possible to get well made metal folding chairs that will outlive the plastic stacking chair. And there are some that are just as comfortable as the plastic stacking chairs.
One area where the plastic chairs outshine the metal folding chairs is in the color they provide to any room, especially when they are new. The metal folding chairs are available in colors besides the ubiquitous putty color, but not in many. You could special order metal chairs in sufficient quantity to justify a special color, but replacements will have to go back to the normally available colors, so such a special effort is not really warranted. The colors of the plastic chairs available may change over time, as decorating taste changes, but if the original set is in several colors, any additional chairs in other colors will fit in and not be obvious replacements.
