The old rocking chair. Where would mothers and grandmothers be without one? Really friendly hotels have them on the front porch. They are a good way to engage the twitchy and hopefully let them rocker themselves into calmness.
There are many kinds of rocking chairs. First is the wooden rocking chair, a menace to toes and cats everywhere. Children stand on the back of the rockers and “help” the person sitting in the chair. It creaks, which can be soothing to a baby or annoying to an adult. It rocks, putting baby to sleep, and allowing an adult to stare into space with the appearance of thinking (and rocking) and not just as zoned out. Good rocking chair.
A bentwood rocking chair has the rockers as part of the frame, so it can rock to the extreme, and roll on over if you try hard enough. So, beware. No riding the rockers, but still the damaged toes and tails scenario. Frequently these rockers are also caned, instead of a solid wooden seat and back or upholstery. Caning is fun to play wide, but restrain yourself. It wears out fast enough through regular use without your picking holes in it. Bentwood rockers usually do not make any sounds.
Upholstered rocking chairs are generally wooden rocking chairs that have been covered with panning and upholstery material. You can tell by the wooden rockers that are still visible. They are more comfortable than the wooden rockers and provide all the advantages of the wooden rocker except longevity. The upholstery will have to be redone every couple of decades, just like upholstered non-rocking chairs in daily use. The chair may still talk when rocking.
Finally, the glider rocking chair. This is a movement away from the dangerous rocker to a frame from which the one or two person seat is suspended. The frame may be wood or metal, for indoor or outdoor use, but the arms holding the seat in the frame will be metal. The base will be wider than usually for a chair or love seat in order to provide stability. An occasional shot of spray lubricant to the pivot points would be a good idea. This will keep the glider silent.
Outdoors the are also rockers available. There are glider rocking chairs, even couches. Here the frame is extended up to six feet and chains hold the seating. Some gliders come with awnings to protect the sitters from sun or rain. The normal metal lawn chair comes in a rocker conformation also. Wicker furniture sets for sun rooms and porches often include a rocker. And the basic wooden rocking chair can be painted white and sent to live on the porch.
Inside or out, rocker or glider, the rocking chair provides the peace of movement without actually going anywhere. The small shift back and forth creates a little air movement, and provides a steady rhythm. I am getting sleepy just thinking about it. By-by, nap time.
