If you home school your children, you can get school chairs and provide the children with an outside-the-home school-like experience. Even if you do not home school your children, you may want to take a look at school chairs for there usefulness. Most school chairs are molded plastic seats on metal legs and look like they stack in order to minimize the amount of space they occupy when not in use. Some chairs are not explicitly noted as stackable, so if you particularly want this feature, be sure to read the information available before you buy them to make sure they will stack.
School chairs come in several sizes so you can get the appropriate one for each child in your household. The sizes are indicated by the height of the seat from the floor, and generally are 10, 12, 14 16 and 18 inches off the ground. And, because the seat is made from plastic, most styles of school chairs are available in many colors. The basic crayon colors are well represented, and black chairs are also available.
Most of the legs on school chairs have nylon or steel glides on them. If you are going to use these chairs at home, give some consideration to the floors where they will be used, lest unwanted damage occur. There are chairs which connect the legs on each side with a piece of metal, and these “sled” designs may have less of an impact on your floors.
Like the adult plastic stacking chairs for adults, the molded plastic seat is attached to the two metal leg pieces at several points. These are usually sufficiently robust to keep the chair together and the younger sitter safe. Excess abuse may result in one or both of the leg pieces coming off the molded seat, at which time a new chair will need to be purchased. I do not think there is any way to repair these chairs.
There are hardwood school chairs available, but they do not seem as popular. given the term “hard” in the name, they may be less comfortable than the chairs with the plastic seats. In some cases they are considerably more expensive. Given how fast your youngsters may outgrow these chairs, having hardwood ones may be an unnecessary expense.
Some of the school chairs are ergonomically designed, provide lumbar support and may be more comfortable for longer periods of time. And there are some that have a designer flair to them, so not all of the plastic seat school chairs look the same. Some also come with the built-in half desk if you are not going to use a table for a work surface. These are usually slightly tilted and therefore not really good for crafts.
