Shed plans can be found many places. First, though, you have to decide several things. Who is going to build the shed? Can it be attached to an existing building, or will it be self-contained? And, is it within your rights as property owner, given your municipality, deed restrictions and neighborhood association?

Once you have answers to these question, you can start looking at shed plans. Free shed plans are available online, and more can be had for the price of a a magazine or book, which is nearly free. Looking at various plans will help you determine how much space you want or need, how complicated a floor plan you can deal with, and whether electricity or running water are going to be required.

Now, it is time to stand back, look at the plans you like best, and reconsider who is going to build the shed, whether it can be electrified and plumbed, and those pesky property restrictions. Are you still within the allowances for your deed, city, county and neighborhood? Is the shed still one you can build yourself, or are you going to need help, manual labor or professional? Has the cost exceeded your budget? There are going to be some yes answers in there, I bet.

So, back to the plans, both desirable and rejected, to consider budget, space and storage requirements, placement of the shed on the property, building techniques, internal and external finishing, electricity and plumbing. Time to consider a pre-built shed as well, now that your requirements are getting more refined (and in reason).

Still going to build your own shed? Good. Look at the plans you like best, and assess them against similar plans. You can even go to the trouble of writing down the pros and cons for the most likely plans and their first cousins. This will help you highlight the best features for your situation. If you are going to the trouble and expense of building a garden shed or storage shed, it is best to make sure your have the best plan for your needs. You are going to be using it for a long time, barring moving to another property.

One more time, consider pre-built sheds and other ready-made solutions. Still need to build you own? OK, then, find your plan, get your building permits, and begin. Enjoy the work outdoors, the process, the resulting shed. You have done it.
