When you live in a small house, or have large crowds over for BBQ’s or Christmas dinner, you are going to need stacking chairs. By stacking, many chairs can be stored in the footprint of just one, saving space over the same number folding chairs. You have a choice not only in the kind of frame you want, but also in whether the seat and back are padded and upholstered.
The stacking chairs available today come in two types. Many resemble folding chairs, having a metal frame and a metal, wood or upholstered seat and back. More fun are the molded one-piece plastic stacking chairs, that come in bright colors and are just as comfortable, being molded to the human shape sitting. There are several styles of the molded plastic stacking chair available. There are also stacking chairs with a metal frame and molded plastic seats or molded wood seats. Some stacking chairs even have arms, although most are armless.
While you may think of plastic outdoor chairs when you hear “stacking chairs,” there are actually some sophisticated modern aluminum chairs that are designed for dining rooms that also stack. The prices range from under $40 to over $500 each. Some of the chairs have names, and even the designer’s name in some cases. The more expensive stacking chairs are not necessarily the house and garden store’s spring special chair you are used to.
After looking at these chairs, I wish I had an excuse to get rid of most of my furniture in favor of a stack of chairs that are mostly out of the way unless needed. Furniture that moves to where it s needed and is easy to clean around can improve the utilization of available space. And, while they are comfortable for a while, you do not have to worry about people staying forever, another advantage. You could even have a small stack of juvenile-sized chairs for the under-age crowd, so they feel gratified in having their own special seats.
As for looking at the stack of chairs when they are not in use, they actually resemble modern sculpture. Place the stack in a corner, and the house cat will have a nice place to survey the scene from until someone needs a chair. Not your idea of art? Well, if you have a closet handy, you can hide the chairs there, or curtain the corner to hide the chairs. Then if someone unwelcome visits, you do not have to offer them a seat, and there will be none readily visible for them to use.
Stacking chairs are also something to consider if you are a member of a church, civic organization or club that needs new seating. The manufactures of stacking chairs usually have trolleys designed to move the stacks of chairs from storage to the place they are needed, saving time and effort in setting up and cleaning up meeting areas. This increases the convenience of having many stacking chairs, although it is of little use to the average householder who needs stacking chairs but does not have a large closet to put them in when not in use.
* * * There are many kinds of chairs that may solve your seating dilemma. Consider a folding outdoor chair, a cheap folding chair, a plastic stacking chair, a rocking chair, a folding chair, an executive chair, a beach chair, a drafting chair, a task chair, a reception chair, or a stackable chair. * * *
