Why is a beach chair lowly? For at least two reasons: the seat is usually low to the ground, and they are made of materials that are not meant to last a long time. The reason the seat is low to or on the ground is to allow the sitter to stretch out his or her legs for tanning. This characteristic is shared by the outdoor folding chaise, but the beach chair is lighter and much easier to transport from the car to the beach, which may be some distance. So the beach chair is a sort of minimal chair: a seat and a back, and little else.
The beach chair usually has a lightweight frame of aluminum tubing or wood. There is just enough frame to hold the seat and back fabric reasonable stretched so when the sitter is sitting the material is placed as it should be. There may be some ground clearance when the chair is empty that disappears when the chair is occupied, so use the beach chair on dry areas of the beach unless you do not mind a wet bottom.
The materials is often canvas with a design painted on it. The grade of canvas will dictate how many summers you will be able to use the beach chair before the material has to be replaced. A child’s beach chairs usually has lighter-weight materials and will not last as long. The way the chairs are handled and whether they are cleaned and allowed to dry after use will also have some bearing on the life span they provide.
Beach chairs are for the young and slender. Those with bad knees or backs or more weight than a medium sized dog will appreciate a regular outdoor folding chairs or cheap folding chairs for the beach. The outdoor folding chairs are usually also based on an aluminum frame with plastic webbing to provide the seat and back. The air flows through the seat and back, which is a good thing at the beach. The legs of the chair lift the seat to a more normal height, which is good for adults. A quick rinse once they are home will make these chairs last a long time even if their usual venue is the beach. If you are felling strong, and the parking lot is near the beach, you can even take the chaise version of the outdoor folding chair, and get some sun on those legs.
For children and young people, beach chairs are fun, and you can encourage them to use them anywhere dry, indoors and out. The beach chair is an easy chair to take on a camping trip for use around the camp fire. Indoors, a rainy day can turn into a pretend day at the beach with a picnic lunch and some beach chairs. It makes me wish I could still get down that low and get up again without major hoisting equipment.
