I saw a really nice twin bed/trundle bed combination the day before yesterday, at a resale for charity store. I wish I had a place for it. The bed and trundle bed frames were a nice medium colored wood, so that the trundle bed appeared to be a large drawer under the top bed. If you didn’t look very closely, you might even think that the twin bed frame merely had unusually tall side boards and that it was just a twin bed. I was sorely tempted, but there is no place for a trundle bed in my house. What a shame. Maybe I could talk my husband into stair-stepped beds.

A trundle bed, whether it is under a twin or larger bed, can add a place for occasional visitors to sleep. Although the trundle bad has only a mattress and not a box spring, since it is not heavily used (maybe), this is not a problem. The upper bed, if a twin, usually also only has a mattress, but there is no reason a box spring could not be added if the extra height on the bed does not cause a problem. And the beauty of the set I saw, was, if no mattress was on the trundle, the solid wood side boards would hide a multitude of sins as a storage area. Maybe when I am single again, if ever, I will be able to find a similar set, although I am kind of in the mood for a canopy bed.

Add a trundle bed to bunk beds and you have room for three sleepers. Add a trundle bed to a full or larger, and you have storage or a space for an extra sleeper. More robust than the under-bed storage units sold, and with wheels incorporated, why aren’t trundle beds sold with every bed? Well, for the highly refined who do not store things under the bed, maybe they do not need one, but regular folks could use a good place to store off-season equipment or extra bedding when not needed. Add risers to the bed above and you might be able to store sleeping bags an other camping equipment in the house instead of in the garage or basement. And if the trundle is pulls out and away, you could actually vacuum under the bed, an impossibility with normal beds.

Now I am beginning to want a narrow trundle bed under the couch. That is wasted space, and with solid sides, it could also be used for storage. Sofas are not tall enough as it is. Longer legs, a trundle storage unit, and you would have seating it is easier to get up off of, and a place to hide old magazines and lose the remotes. I’m going to have to talk to the furniture designers about this.

So, if you have storage problems, and beds, consider adding a trundle bad to each one. Risers to raise the bed up are available at home stores and in catalogs, and the metal trundle bed frame should not be hard to find. The bed skirt on the bed will hide the trundle and its contents. All you need is enough room on one side of the bed to pull the trundle half way out, if it is not going to be used for sleeping. Remember to measure the distance between the legs on the sides of the bed frame, so the trundle will fit between them, and check for a center leg, which will negate your ability to have a trundle bed at all. Shucks.
