If you have a small yard, and a walking lawn mower and a few tools to take care of it, then the garden shed you need will be relatively small. You need space for the mower and trimmer, and a place to store the leaf blower. Tools can be held by tool racks to keep them off the floor of the shed. Shelves or pallets for bags of mulch, sand and potting soil will be needed, and you may even want to plan for a small potting bench. To work at the potting bench, you will need light to see by. A hose holder or two may be a good idea as well.
If you have potted plants, you will need a little shelf storage for empty pots and hand tools. The fuel for gas powered tools, and a few insecticides and fertilizers need shelf space. You will probably also store any harmful chemicals from the house or garage here, so keep that in mind.
OK, now we have four shelves, a small potting bench, palettes for the bags of soil etc. and space for the power equipment. And you need room to turn around and fetch stuff in and out. Seems like the shed is getting bigger all the time. But consider that this is the only garden shed you will ever have and buy accordingly. It is easier to get excited and find the money to buy the first shed than it will ever be again. But, before you decide on a plane hanger, remember the legal restrictions you are limited by and what it will be made of.
In the end, you need space for everything you already have and for the additional stuff that will be added when the convenience of having a garden shed leaves you more time to think of other improvements for the yard and garden. So plan accordingly.
