If you have a yard or garden, you probably have tools and equipment that you need to store between uses. A garden shed would be the perfect choice, as it would keep the tools close to the place they are used, and you can use your garage for your car. But there are a few things you need to consider before you buy that shed and move in.
If you live in the city or the suburbs, you have to consider deed restrictions, home owner association regulations and the city code. When you bought the property, you probably did not pay much attention to the deed restriction, or they seemed reasonable at the time. So check the papers from the closing and see if there is any information about restrictions included. If your home is in a development with a home owner’s association, you should have a booklet with the rules and regulations, so check that also. Finally, by buying inside the city or town limits, you are subject to the rules and regulations of that civic entity. While you may not want a copy of the complete code, you should talk to the appropriate people in the courthouse about what the code requires for out buildings. There may be restrictions on the maximum size or the material it can built of, how it is floored, and whether you can run electricity to it.
It is much better to check this out before you buy and erect the garden shed than to find out later, create hard feelings in the neighborhood and have to pay for the town to demolish and haul away the shed.
Seem unfair? Remember, those same restrictions stop your neighbor from building a three story garage/game room/mother-in-law apartment conglomeration right on the property line and blocking the sun-light from your vegetable garden or swimming pool. Or at least they may do so. Finding our your property restrictions is probably a good idea in general. Make a page of notes and store them with your important, buy handy papers for future reference.
